Job Developments Through the Year

Job Cuts Year to Date for the Top Five Industries

CyberCoders, a leading worldwide recruiting firm, is predicting jobs in technology will be the 2011 Jobs of the Year. While the demand for tech jobs is on a steady rise, tech is not the only industry where candidates are gaining the upper hand in the hiring market. The recent December Job Report from Simply Hired shows job openings across the U.S. decreased 4.4 percent from November, a typical slow-down in the last weeks of the year with seasonal hiring – the same slow-down in job openings was reported in the Monster Employment Index. Both noted an increase in the Y-o-Y jobs at 69.4 percent – highlighting the uptick in recruiting staff for the year as mentioned in last week’s Data Watch.

Although job openings in most industries declined this month (12 out of 16), the hospitality industry showed a notable increase of 8.7 percent. The industry, which includes restaurants, hotels and similar businesses, likely experienced growth due to the holiday season. This mirrors the 17 of 24 occupation categories which also experienced a decline; some however saw job cuts decline by more than 90 percent.

How to Get the Best Talent NOW!

Felicia McKinney, National Campus and Diversity Talent Acquisition Lead, CDW

As the economy continues to make a labored recovery, companies are still cautious to increase their hiring. According to a survey by the Collegiate Employment Research Institute at Michigan State University, 36 percent of companies which hired new graduates last year are either uncertain they’ll hire or have decided they won’t hire this year. The survey found small businesses are still reluctant to hire while companies with more than 4,000 employees, or those which had preliminary hiring goals targeting new college grads, were more likely to hire in the coming year. For recent or soon-to-be college graduates, these statistics can seem confusing as they try to find a place to start their job search. For employers with limited open positions, this means you need to ensure you are interviewing only the best candidates for each job. On campus, it’s more important than ever for employers to be able to engage top talent early in their decision-making process and for students to start researching where they want to work.

Nearly Half of Industries Hiring, but Majority Need Specialized Skills

Nearly Three-Quarters of Employers Looking for Employees in Q2

More than 48 percent of industries experienced a quarterly percentage gain in online jobs posted, according to Beyond.com, Inc.’s Second Quarter 2010 Career Trend Analysis Report, released earlier this week. This reconciles with findings fromMonster Employment Index, which has shown a year-over-year increase in online job postings for the past six months. More than 73 percent of employers were looking for full-time employees, according to Beyond’s findings, an increase of 12 percent from the previous quarter. Healthcare and Medical represented the largest percentage gain in overall jobs posted (5.57 percent), followed by 2.24 percent for Sales and Sales Management.
