NEW YORK –(BUSINESS WIRE)– With expectations that hiring activity will increase this year and next, HR departments at a large number of U.S. employers say that talent and performance management technology systems will be one of the most critical HR service delivery issues they will face in 2011, according to an annual survey conducted by Towers Watson (NYSE, NASDAQ: TW), a global professional services company. The 14th annual survey on HR service delivery trends and practices also found that companies are planning to increase their spending on HR technology this year as they look for new ways to improve their efficiency and effectiveness.
“To achieve maximum success for the business — both for the individual initiatives and for the HR function overall — you really do need to address all three of these simultaneously.”

With recent reports of jobless claims falling in the U.S., it is not surprising that the number of graduates organizations plan to hire is set to increase – if the number hasn’t already increased. In September 2010, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) projected organizations would be hiring 13.5% more graduates from the Class of 2011 compared to the graduating class of 2010 – and it is apparent the outlook for 2011 graduates is more promising now with currently projections at 19.3%. Overall, responding organizations to NACE’s Job Outlook Update reported the number of job applications has risen nearly 45% since last year during this time – while the total number of positions reported by respondents has tripled. As a result, the average number of applications per opening has fallen from 40.5 in 2010 to just over 21 – a clear indicator of more job opportunities in the market.

During a recession most employees stay at their job whether they are happy or not. They don’t want to take a chance at being the last person hired and the first person cut back. According to a recent survey by The Conference Board, only 40% of those surveyed said they were satisfied with their job. This is the lowest level of job satisfaction since they began the survey over 22 years ago.
A study by Right Management found that 60% of employees intend to leave their current positions when the economy improves and an additional 25% are networking and updating their resumes.

But I know a lot of former recruiters who’ve used what they learned starting out in recruiting to build successful careers in something else.
Some of them even asked my advice somewhere along the line or took one of my company’s assessments — and, interestingly enough, most of that happened after we ran into each other at one holiday party or another.
