Looking for Gen Y? Read Their Blogs!
As the labor market continues to tighten, the conversations that we're having with our employer clients have shifted from how they are receiving too many resumes to how they're not receiving enough resumes to how the candidates who are sending resumes seem to all have multiple job offers in hand by the time our clients have interviewed them. So what's the answer? Unfortunately, there is no silver bullet but there are some alternatives.
As Human Resource (HR) professionals, we always tell candidates to network as 90% of job openings go unadvertised and only 10% of candidates properly network so if they only apply advertised job openings then they're going to be one of the 90% of candidates chasing after 10% of the job openings. They should network properly so they can be one of the 10% of candidates chasing after 90 % of the job openings.
Interestingly, few of us have ever stopped to consider that the same metrics apply to recruiters. If you only source candidates who are using job boards like CollegeRecruiter.com then you're in that group of 90% of recruiters who are chasing after 10% of the candidates. What you need to do is get into the 10% of recruiters who are chasing after 90% of the candidates. A great way of doing that is to read blogs written by the candidates.
In an April 10, 2007 CareerJournal article, Ryan Loken, a recruitment manager for Wal-Mart Stores, indicated that he has filled some 125 jobs by reading blogs entries and the comments made to those blog entries and contacting writers who make intelligent contributions. Brilliant. Loken clearly understands that most candidates are not in the resume banks and don't apply to advertised job openings so rather than lamenting how difficult it is to get candidates to find him, he's turned the tables on the whole process and has instead devised a simple, cheap, yet extremely effective way of finding them.
