HR at the Table When "Going Global"

A majority of companies involve their human resources and HR information technology (HRIT) departments in global business planning efforts, finds a survey to assess the global readiness of HR and HRIT. Core HR processes show variability, according to the preliminary data: 30.8% of companies manage their HR processes locally, whereas 25.6% do so globally. Additionally, 53% of companies say cultural differences comprise a key challenge facing them in going global, according to the joint research by Jeitosa Group International and International Association for Human Resource Information Management (IHRIM).

Certain aptitudes especially contribute to global success, according to the 80 companies whose responses are reported in the preliminary findings. The top competency, say respondents, is having a global mindset (54.5%). Next comes risk tolerance (44%), followed by cultural intelligence (44%), accommodation/flexibility (38%) and being adaptable to change (36%).

Additionally, the survey finds that:

  • For the majority of companies, their mission and vision (55.8%) and strategies and plans (50.8 percent) are set by global headquarters
  • The most common global functions are procurement (59%), followed by governance (52.6%)
  • The majority of companies (57.7%) have implemented one single global HR system
  • Most HR software is vendor-developed (70.5%) compared to hosted (12.8%), in-house developed (9%), software-as-a-service (3.8%) or outsourced (1.3%)
