With military returning to the U.S. from Iraq and Afghanistan, there is a growing need for veteran employment. The United States currently is home to over 23 million veterans who have served active duty in the U.S. armed forces, according to the Office of Veteran Affairs. This large subset of the population has highly transferable military skills such as the capacity to learn new skills quickly, a strong sense of teamwork, and leadership abilities. The…

Employers Beware: Gen Y Will Text You if Given the Chance
By Steven Rothberg
One of the best writers for the Wall Street Journal is Sarah Needleman. She writes a lot about employment-related issues and many of those focus on issues related to college students searching for internships and recent graduates hunting for entry level jobs. A recent article was a beauty but surely read very differently to different readers. Perhaps that was the intent. Sarah interviewed a number of employers and candidates about the emerging trend of college students…

Job Hunters Go From HuntingToHired
While the prospect of job hunting is often daunting, recently launched online job-search, HuntingToHired, is a new online course system designed to address exactly this need, by teaching the critical job-searching skills critical to finding employment. While resources abound to try and address the issue, many young job seekers are reporting ever-higher stress levels as they approach the job-search. Founder of HuntingToHired, Danny Iny, explains that the online job search training was created due to…

Diversity Filter Enhances Candidate Experience
Job search engine and recruitment advertising network, Simply Hired, announces that job seekers are now able to refine their job search to consist only of employers featured on the Top 50 Companies for Diversity list released annually by DiversityInc, a diversity and business publication. Diversity within businesses has become an increasingly hot topic over the past few years. The Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) has enforced more stringent employment laws requiring companies to…

For Most Companies, Layoffs Are Tough to Avoid
The current economic crisis is clearly having a direct impact on the corporate workforce, according to a recent study by the Institute for Corporate Productivity (i4cp). The study found that 58% of polled companies have had a reduction in force (RIF) within the last year, and 39% foresee one coming within the next six months. In addition, of those companies that reported a RIF in the last year, almost half (48%) expect another cut in…

Tough Times Are a Litmus Test for Whether You're in the Right Career
By Allison Cheston
You don't need me to tell you that the business climate is very uncertain, to say the least: clients are defecting, or at best dragging their feet; candidates are nervous about making a move. Around you the executive search industry is taking a hit, and everyone is asking: "How's your business?" It's likely that you're busier than ever. After all, there are plenty of clients and candidates needing hand-holding and persuading, and that is a very…

Strategic HR Services Improve the Bottom-Line
Improving workforce productivity, as well as reducing administrative and turnover costs are often at the forefront of our minds as we continue to battle a turbulent economy. Achilles Group, provider of professional HR services, is offering a Strategic HR Assessment which illustrates how to improve workforce productivity by at least 5% while reducing administrative costs by 20% to 60%. The Strategic HR Assessment is targeted at companies who already have their basic payroll/benefits needs met…

Unemployment Spikes Again in October
The nation lost an additional 240,000 jobs in October, and the unemployment rate rose 0.4%, from 6.1% to 6.5% percent, reaching a new monthly high yet again. The rate was 4.8% a year earlier. Job losses over the last three months total 651,000, after accounting for downward revisions to employment estimates for August and September. So far this year, payroll employment has decreased by 1.2 million. In October, manufacturing employment continued to fall by 90,000…

The Times They Are a-Changin’
By Chris Murdock
A great man sang the words, "The times they are a-changin'." These words, written by Bob Dylan during a time of great uncertainty in our country’s history, very well could have been written today. Today, the U.S. economy and economies all around the world have slowed, thus creating the inevitability of a changed world. It’s how we view that change, however, that will define our future. We can either panic and slip further away from…

Psychiatrists Neutral on Universal Healthcare
Research by physician recruiting firm, LocumTenens.com, indicates that among the medical specialists the firm places, many psychiatrists believe they may have the least to lose if universal healthcare coverage is implemented under the incoming Administration. In its 2008 psychiatrist salary survey, LocumTenens.com asked how psychiatrists thought universal healthcare would affect their personal incomes: among almost 200 respondents, 56% predict universal healthcare would have no effect on their incomes, 21% anticipate a negative effect, while another…

Tech Wages Slip in Q3
Wages for technology professionals appear to be on a steady decline, according to data from the third quarter Yoh Index of Technology Wages. With more than a 6% drop, technology wages are at the lowest level since the beginning of 2006. "It appears that the demand for technology workers continues to ebb," says Bill Yoh, President and CEO of Yoh. "We believe we'll continue to see softening in certain sectors as the state of the…

Job Market Bright Spots
Even in the current economy, certain skill sets remain difficult to find, according to the 2009 Salary Guides from Robert Half International. Modest overall salary increases for accounting, information technology (IT) and administrative roles can enhance a professional’s marketability; however, specialized expertise is a particular asset in these troubled economic times. This includes account reconciliation and credit/collections experience for accountants and web development skills for IT professionals, the report indicates. "Companies highly value employees who can…

Increase Customer Satisfaction – Candidate and Hiring Managers Alike
By Eric Kramer
My last article established that most recruiters provide 30 minutes of interview preparation to their candidates. Recruiter interview preparation typically consists of filling the candidate in on position details, company culture, and interviewer(s) background/personality. Recruiters do not have the time to, nor do they see a benefit in, providing more general interviewing skills and strategies. Imagine if 45 to 60 minutes of interview preparation increased the send-out-to-hire ratio by 3 to 5 percent. The ROI…
