HR Time Spent on Recruiting

Despite the recession, recruiting remains an important activity for HR professionals. Survey results found that 39.4 percent of respondents’ HR departments spend 11 percent to 25 percent of their time on recruiting; 19 percent spend 26 percent to 49 percent of their time on this activity. Slightly under a third (32.4 percent) invest 10 percent or less of the department’s time on recruiting, while at the other end of the spectrum 9.2 percent spend 50 percent to 75 percent of department time on recruiting.

Larger organizations tend to spend more time recruiting, although not across the board. For instance, 14.3 percent of responding organizations with more than 2,500 FTEs invest 50 percent to 75 percent of their time in recruiting (see Figure 7); a slightly higher percentage (15.6 percent) of organizations with 101 to 250 make this same investment. For most organizations, regardless of size, 11 percent to 25 percent of the HR department’s time seems to be the most likely amount devoted to recruiting activities.
