Initially trained to be a musician and college professor, Sharon was a National Merit Scholar and Woodrow Wilson Fellow who received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas. As heir to a multi-generational family business, she had always been on the sidelines and a part of the company founded in 1951 by her father, Dr. Roger W. Birkman, but until 2001, placed a priority on raising three children and partnering in the career of her husband, international opera singer, Richard Paul Fink.

Headquartered in Houston, Texas, Birkman International, Inc. provides a behavioral and motivational assessment called The Birkman Method ® which is delivered on the internet and available in multiple languages. It is used by organizations worldwide and features a research database of nearly three million people.

After serving throughout the 1990’s as a trainer and career advisor for Birkman, Sharon became a VP in 2001 and was designated President and CEO in 2002. She recently completed the three-year Owner-President Management Course at Harvard Business School where the Birkman assessment has now been incorporated into the executive education curriculum. Sharon’s objective is to grow the legacy of her father into the 21st century.

On average in a typical economy, up to 50% of newly hired executives leave their jobs within three years. Add to that turnover the fact that demographic shifts in the workforce will continue. Although millions of baby boomers are wondering today whether they can afford to retire, retirement for these workers (many of whom have risen to management positions) is inevitable at some point. Given the fact that they represent nearly half of the current workforce, the pool of available “senior” managers will shrink even as it creates a replacement need.
