It’s that time again when all the predictions for the New Year are stated and we have to wait 12 months to see if they are real or imagined. My thoughts on what will be an important activity in 2011 bring me back to Employment Branding. When I wrote The Cultural Fit Factor, How to Create an Employment Brand that Attracts, Retains and Repels the Right Employee, published by SHRM in 2009, the country was just heading into an economic downturn. But here we are, just one and half years later and we’re just beginning to see glimmers of hope. Now is the time to realize that the need to find the right cultural fit is stronger than ever.

It’s official…once again Dr. John Sullivan has predicted a future trend which is becoming a reality. In June of 2009, Dr. Sullivan predicted “within a few years the “interview from anywhere” approach will become the standard practice for all but final hiring interviews.” Here we are, one and a half years later and the number of companies which have implemented these solutions has tripled and the early adopters are using live virtual interviews as the de facto standard first step in the candidate assessment process. The “interview from anywhere” solutions are saving candidate travel dollars and reducing the carbon footprint. It sounds like this will be the direction talent acquisition is heading.

Consumer brand identity and Employment Brand effectiveness will evolve into a more closely aligned value proposition with the green movement. Companies that practice sustainable leadership, embrace social responsibility and leverage that into their EVP will be well positioned for Gen Y and generations of the future.

You read that correctly…greenified. If you’re not familiar with the term, you may have missed one of the best Broadway shows in some time, Wicked, when the not-yet-so-wicked witch wonders if the Wizard will offer to “degreenify” her. I think it’s a great term and I’m finding today in business the term is getting more popular. Are more and more companies really heading down the green path? Yep, you can bet your Kindle on it! Whether touting sustainability in mission statements, annual reports or even on the bottom of most emails these days, companies are mentioning some kind of effort to be greener.
