A 26-Year High in Unemployment Rate

As the U.S. jobless rate rises to 10.2% for the first time since 1983, jobless figures rose by 190,000 rendering the number of unemployed people at 15.7 million, reports the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

And while health care continued to see a positive increase in jobs (29,000), the largest job losses occurred in construction (-62,000), manufacturing (-61,000), and retail trade (-40,000). One other positive contributor to October’s employment rate occurred in temporary help services, which added 34,000 jobs.

As discussion on a rebounding economy continues to raise skepticism, many U.S. employers do not anticipate adding jobs in significant numbers for the next several months. Perhaps, as the pace at which jobs continue to disappear taper off in October, this might serve as the precursor to eventual growth.
