While it might be assumed this is because more women, including those with young children, now work, another factor has contributed to the shift. From an employment standpoint, the U.S. recession impacted more men than women as male-dominated industries like construction, transportation, manufacturing, and wholesale trade lost large numbers of jobs, where female-dominated industries like health care, government, and education shed fewer positions.

As the recession begins to slowly turn around, employers are naturally cautious about increasing the size of the workforce until it becomes clear that hiring additional full-time workers is justified. The solution traditionally has been to hire through staffing agencies so that an employer had flexibility to adjust to the ups and downs of the recovery.

Since it can be expensive to recruit, hire, and train new employees, companies need to know why employees leave. One way to uncover the reasons is to conduct an exit interview.
